I have been appalled by the violence we have seen in recent weeks in Jerusalem and across Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories more widely.
The loss of life is utterly devastating and my thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones. I am always mindful about adding to the already vast social commentary on what is obviously an extremely complex situation.
My opinion is not particularly unique, but to clarify – I believe the focus must be on pursuing a two-state solution that ensures a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state.
To me, this is the only way to secure a meaningful and long-lasting peace. The disgusting anti-Semitism that we have seen in recent days in North London and online acts as another important reminder of the dangerous conflation of the actions of the state of Israel with the Jewish population across the world. I condemn such anti-Semitic abuse and rhetoric in the strongest possible terms.
I don’t claim to have the answers to these extremely complex issues but I am committed to listening and seeking the best possible solution for all.
